The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched on August 28, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a decade of successful implementation today. As the largest financial inclusion initiative in the world, PMJDY has played a crucial role in integrating marginalized communities into the economic mainstream, according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The scheme has provided over 53.14 crore beneficiaries with access to formal banking services, leading to total deposit balances of Rs. 2,31,236 crore as of August 2024.
Minister Sitharaman emphasized the importance of universal and affordable banking services in achieving financial inclusion, highlighting that PMJDY has transformed the financial landscape by offering bank accounts, small savings schemes, insurance, and credit to the previously unbanked. She noted that 55.6% of Jan Dhan account holders are women, and 66.6% of accounts are in rural and semi-urban areas, reflecting the scheme’s reach.
The linking of Jan Dhan accounts with mobile numbers and Aadhaar has created a consent-based pipeline that enables swift and transparent transfer of government welfare benefits. This integration has also promoted digital payments, with over 36 crore RuPay cards issued to account holders, providing them with accident insurance coverage of Rs. 2 lakh.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary praised PMJDY as a transformative movement that has instilled financial independence among the unbanked population. He highlighted that the scheme not only facilitates direct benefit transfers and subsidies but also serves as a platform for financial services like insurance and credit, especially for workers in the unorganized sector.
PMJDY has significantly contributed to the growth of digital transactions in India, with UPI and RuPay card transactions seeing substantial increases in recent years. The scheme’s success underscores the importance of mission-mode governance, public-private partnerships, and the use of digital public infrastructure like Aadhaar for financial inclusion.
Overall, PMJDY has revolutionized financial inclusion in India by providing access to banking services, enabling savings, and offering credit to those without a formal financial history. As the world’s largest financial inclusion scheme, it continues to empower millions of individuals, driving economic growth and development across the country.
