India’s national power transmission network has achieved a major milestone, surpassing 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines (220 kV and above) along with 1,407 GVA of transformation capacity (220 kV and above). The achievement was marked on 14th January 2026 with the commissioning of a 628 ckm, 765 kV transmission line from Bhadla II to Sikar II substation, facilitating the evacuation of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Zone. This line will enable the evacuation of an additional 1,100 MW from the Bhadla, Ramgarh, and Fatehgarh Solar Power Complexes.
Since April 2014, India’s transmission network has expanded by 71.6%, with 2.09 lakh ckm of new transmission lines added and 876 GVA of additional transformation capacity. The inter-regional power transfer capacity now stands at 1,20,340 MW, enabling seamless electricity transfer across the country and fulfilling the vision of “One Nation – One Grid – One Frequency.”
Ongoing projects under the Inter-State Transmission plan are expected to add around 40,000 ckm of transmission lines and 399 GVA of transformation capacity. Similarly, Intra-State Transmission projects under implementation will contribute another 27,500 ckm of transmission lines and 134 GVA, further enhancing grid reliability and power evacuation capability.
This expansion is critical to supporting India’s non-fossil power generation target of 500 GW by 2030, ensuring timely and efficient evacuation of renewable energy. The milestone reflects the government’s sustained commitment to reliable, affordable, and secure electricity supply while accelerating the integration of renewable energy across the country.
