Bureau of Indian Standards held annual conference on stability and environmental standards

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organized its annual conference for Dean and Heads of Departments (HODs) in Goa in Goa. During the two -day conference, 45 representatives from 32 partner institutions held a thorough discussion with senior BIS officers on the topic “Sthaleism through standards”.

In his welcome address, Deputy Director General (Southern Area) Shri Praveen Khanna spoke about the important role of educational institutions in developing national and international standards.

Deputy Director General (standardization-II) Shri Sanjay Pant highlighted the importance of standardization in dealing with the challenges related to stability. Mr. Sanjay Pant said, “standardization is the foundation of durability. By collaborating with academics, we can develop research -operated standards, which solve environmental challenges and create a permanent effect for future generations.”

He introduced the newly established environment and ecology department (EED), in which various standardization activities of BIS were linked to a dedicated division. Since its inception, EED has released about 100 standard through its nine special committees.

The conference included comprehensive technical sessions on the ongoing initiatives within the Environment and Ecological Division Council (EEDC), where 8 expert panels are engaged in standardization in important areas, including air quality management, water quality management, waste management, environmental monitoring, permanent housing, durable agriculture, circular economy and biodiversity and eco-system.

The prominent speakers included Dr. Alok Sinha (IIT Dhanbad), Dr. Anju Singh (IIM Mumbai) and Ms. Shabnam Bassi (Home Council), who stressed the need to overcome the need to overcome intervals in existing standards to promote national climate initiatives like National Action Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC) for climate change.

Using the ‘Learn Your Standards’ feature on the BIS Care App, the participants evaluated the existing standards and identified new areas for development. Waste management and recycling, water quality and management, sustainable construction and materials, environmental monitoring and pollution control, green energy and climate change were the main topics involved in mitigation, health and safety standards and campus and industrial durability discussions.

On the second day, the representatives saw live performance of digital solutions of BIS, including academic dashboard, which is a platform for partner institutions to reach standards, submit research projects and contribute to technical committees. The BIS also presented equipment to download and comment on the draft standards, promoting participation in international standardization efforts.

A special session led by Mr. Ritesh Barnwal (Director, Finance, BIS) focused on the role of stability and the role of standards in sustainable finance. His presentation showed how financial structures can provide the basis for durability initiatives through standardization.

The BIS annual conference strengthened the organization’s commitment to create standards with the academic world that should solve the issues related to important environmental and ecology. The goal of BIS is to set up a strong, research -powered standard, which contribute to a more sustainable future by promoting partnerships between experts, researchers and policy makers.
