On the occasion of National Sports Day on 29th August, tribute was paid to Hockey Magician and Padma Bhushan awarded great player Major Dhyan Chand on his birth anniversary at Banaras Locomotive Works. General Secretary of BLW Sports Association cum Chief Mechanical Engineer, Production Shri Suneel Kumar along with officers, members of Staff Council, employees, coaches and players of various sports paid floral tribute to the portrait of Major Dhyan Chand at BLW Central Sports Ground. It is noteworthy that the birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand, who scored more than 400 goals and was a part of the Indian Hockey team that won Gold Medal in 1928, 1932 and 1936 Olympics, is celebrated every year as National Sports Day. On this occasion, a football match was organized at BLW Central Sports Stadium and the Chief Guest General Secretary of BLW Sports Association cum Chief Mechanical Engineer, Production of Shri Suneel Kumar met the players and encouraged them for good sportsmanship and hard work. On this occasion, he rewarded the players of various sports by giving them certificates and cash prizes.
In the program organized on the occasion of National Sports Day, Chief Guest Shri Suneel Kumar elaborately threw light on the dedicated sports contribution of the great Indian hockey player Major Dhyan Chand and said that in recent years, the players of Banaras Locomotive Works have hoisted the country’s flag on the world stage. He encouraged people to play sports and highlighted the benefits of sports in daily life and told that by playing sports, a person remains physically fit and also mentally healthy. He informed about the efforts being made by BLW Sports Association through Sports Academy towards raising the level of various sports and increasing the basic facilities. Principal of Technical Training Centre Shri Jitendra Agarwal, Deputy Chief Material Manager, Headquarters Shri Nitesh Sharma, Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer, Plant Shri S.K. Singh, Deputy Chief Marketing Manager Shri Manoj Shukla, Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer Spare Parts Shri M. P. Singh, Deputy Chief Mechanical Engineer Shri Mukesh Karidhal, Senior Material Manager Loco Shri Ankit Jain, Senior Sports Officer & Arjun Awardee Shri Bahadur Prasad, Public Relations Officer Shri Rajesh Kumar, Employee Council members Shri Naveen Sinha and Shri Amit Yadav along with a large number of coaches & players of various sports like badminton, wrestling, football, basketball, volleyball, hockey, javelin throw, shot put and cricket were present.
