Indian Navy inaugurated residential accommodation for Senior Sailors and Defence Civilians at the Naval Base, Karwar, as part of Project Seabird Phase IIA, strengthening infrastructure for personnel and families. The inauguration was led by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and witnessed by FOC-in-C Western Naval Command Vice Admiral K Swaminathan, Director General Project Seabird Vice Admiral Rajesh Dhankhar, and other senior officers.
New township, located east of Manzil Creek and Amdalli, comprises four towers for 240 Senior Sailors’ married accommodations and four towers for 240 Defence Civilian units. Upon completion, Project Seabird Phase IIA will provide 2,160 units for Senior Sailors and 3,168 units for Defence Civilians, creating a self-sustained residential ecosystem. The construction, executed by NCC Ltd, Hyderabad, has already generated 7,000 direct and 25,000 indirect jobs, contributing to the local economy, industry, and tourism.
Phase IIA of Project Seabird also includes a dual-use Naval Air Station, a full-fledged Naval Dockyard, four Covered Dry Berths, and logistics facilities for ships and aircraft, supporting the berthing of a large number of vessels and submarines. The project will accommodate approximately 10,000 uniformed and civilian personnel with families, significantly enhancing operational readiness.
Complying with Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEF) norms and the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), the project is expected to achieve IGBC Gold certification. Over 90% of materials and equipment have been sourced domestically, aligning with the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative and reinforcing India’s self-reliant defence infrastructure.
