Engineers India Limited (EIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) to provide engineering services for the analysis and design of civil structures for the 220 MWe Bharat Small Reactor (BSR).
The agreement was formalised at EIL’s New Delhi office on September 24 in the presence of EIL Chairperson and Managing Director Vartika Shukla, along with senior management from both organisations. The MoU was signed by the Director (Commercial) of EIL and the Director (Technical) of NPCIL.
EIL, a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, brings decades of expertise in engineering services from concept to commissioning across multiple industries. NPCIL, operating under the Department of Atomic Energy, is India’s premier nuclear power producer, responsible for designing, constructing, and managing the country’s nuclear power plants.
This collaboration advances the Government of India’s Nuclear Energy Mission for Viksit Bharat, targeting 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047 and supporting the national goal of Net Zero emissions by 2070.
The Bharat Small Reactor builds on NPCIL’s proven design of 220 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs), enhanced with state-of-the-art safety upgrades, modern codes and standards, and regulatory compliance. The upgraded design enables faster deployment of small reactors across India, offering green energy solutions for energy-intensive sectors such as steel, aluminium, and cement, while replacing aging captive thermal power plants.
With this strategic partnership, India is set to accelerate the adoption of indigenous nuclear technology, reinforcing energy security and paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable power future.
