DEEPAK KUMAR | – THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO and NTPC to enhance landslide and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) risk management for the Tapovan–Vishnugad and Vishnugad–Pipalkoti Hydroelectric Projects in Uttarakhand.
The MoU was formalised at NRSC’s Hyderabad office to strengthen climate resilience and disaster risk reduction for critical hydropower infrastructure. As part of the collaboration, NRSC will provide satellite-derived databases, high-resolution mapping, and risk assessments for landslides and glacial lakes, along with capacity-building and customised training programmes to improve early-warning and monitoring systems within THDCIL.
Highlighting the agreement’s significance, R. K. Vishnoi, Chairperson and Managing Director of THDCIL, said the partnership demonstrates THDCIL’s commitment to sustainable hydropower development while addressing climate-change challenges and natural hazards.
Representatives signing the MoU included U. D. Dangwal, General Manager (D&E–Civil), and Vibhash Singh Pathania, Deputy General Manager (D&E–Civil) from THDCIL; Madhukar Aggarwal, General Manager, and Sanjeeta Kumari, Deputy General Manager from NTPC; and G. Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Director, B. Simhadri Rao, Group Head – Water Resources, and Ishwar Chandra Das, Group Director from NRSC, in the presence of Prakash Chauhan, Director of NRSC (ISRO).
This initiative aligns with India’s strategic focus on energy security and climate adaptation, leveraging advanced satellite technology to protect vital renewable energy assets and the communities they serve.
