Ministry of Railways to support Indian Startups/MSMEs/Entrepreneurs/Innovators with funds for development of innovative products & low cost solutions for Railway network
This program aims to harness the expertise of Indian startups, MSMEs, individual innovators, R&D organizations, NGOs, and entrepreneurs to enhance the operational efficiency and safety of the railway network.
In a significant move to improve railway operations and services through innovation, the Ministry of Railways launched the “Startups for Railways” initiative on June 13, 2022. This program seeks to leverage the expertise of Indian startups, MSMEs, individual innovators, R&D organizations, NGOs, and entrepreneurs to enhance the operational efficiency and safety of the railway network.
As part of this initiative, the Indian Railways Innovation Portal was launched and can be accessed at https://innovation.indianrailways.gov.in/. As of July 2024, a total of 1,942 entities involved in innovation have registered on the Indian Railways Innovation Portal. These entities include startups, individual innovators, MSMEs, R&D organizations, and others.
The Ministry of Railways has conducted meticulously planned workshops, meetings, talks, and video conferences to raise awareness among various stakeholders about the Innovation Policy, resulting in significant participation from startups and innovators.
The Ministry of Railways has received a total of 423 proposals in response to the 28 problem statements published on the Innovation Portal. So far, 23 innovation projects addressing 15 problem statements have been awarded. The combined value of these 23 awarded innovation projects is approximately Rs. 43.87 crore, with Indian Railways contributing approximately Rs. 10.52 crore in grants to eligible entities.
The problem statements for which projects have already been awarded include the design of superior elastomeric pads for heavy haul freight wagons, lightweight wagons for transporting commodities like salt, rail stress monitoring systems, track inspection technologies for accurate inspection, broken rail systems, track cleaning machines, sensor-based load calculation devices with audio-visual alarms for VPUs/Power Cars/SLRs, simplified OHE cantilever designs, quick point locking clamps/systems, sensor-based fire/smoke detection systems for coaches with wireless networking, e-seal systems for securing booked consignments on Indian Railways, and the development of technological solutions to avoid unsafe situations.
