BHEL Pioneering India’s Nuclear Power Advancement

In India’s quest for energy self-sufficiency, BHEL has emerged as a pivotal force within the nation’s nuclear power sector. With a storied history spanning several decades, BHEL has played an instrumental role in shaping India’s ambitious nuclear program.

BHEL’s influence is particularly evident within India’s Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) fleet. Our Steam Turbine Generator sets power 13 of the 23 operational reactors, contributing over half of India’s 7.48 GWe nuclear capacity. Notably, the Kaiga Unit-1, utilizing BHEL technology, set a world record with 962 days of continuous operation, underscoring the reliability of our systems.

Innovation at BHEL is ongoing and dynamic. We are at the forefront of India’s transition to higher capacity reactors, exemplified by our involvement in the groundbreaking 700 MWe PHWR projects. The successful operation of Kakrapar Unit-3 since June 2024 and the recent synchronization of Kakrapar Unit-4 in February 2024 mark significant milestones in this journey.

Our expertise in nuclear technology is comprehensive. BHEL has delivered crucial primary side equipment, including 44 Nuclear Steam Generators and 96 Reactor Headers, all manufactured to the highest standards in our state-of-the-art facilities.

Looking ahead, BHEL is actively engaged in advancing Fast Breeder Reactor technology, as demonstrated by our work on the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam. Additionally, we are exploring the potential of Thorium-based 300 MWe Advanced Heavy Water Reactors, which could revolutionize nuclear fuel cycles.

Our collaborative efforts extend to Light Water Reactor technology as well, with BHEL playing a vital role in the erection and commissioning of equipment for the 2×1000 MWe Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4.

At the core of these achievements is BHEL’s world-class infrastructure. Our manufacturing facilities feature clean rooms and precision machining setups, while our testing capabilities include advanced facilities such as UHV labs and NABL-accredited testing centers.

The foundation of BHEL’s success lies in our team of over 9,000 skilled engineers, whose expertise spans the entire spectrum of nuclear equipment design and manufacturing.
