The 6th South Asian Geosciences Conference and Exhibition (#GEOINDIA2024) was inaugurated on 15 November 2024 by the Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri. The event, organized by the Association of Petroleum Geologists (APG) India, brought together industry leaders, experts, and stakeholders to explore the future of energy, under the theme “Exploring New Dimensions of Energy Dynamics.” The conference, which runs from 15 to 17 November 2024, serves as a platform for advancing discussions on energy challenges and innovations in South Asia.
Among the dignitaries present at the inauguration were Oil India Limited CMD Dr. Ranjit Rath, ONGC Chairman Arun Kumar Singh, and Sushma Rawat, ONGC Director (Exploration) and APG India Patron.
A Vision for India’s Energy Future
Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, during his address, emphasized the Government of India’s strong support for open revenue-sharing models and ease of business reforms, which are crucial to shaping a promising energy future for India. Highlighting the growing importance of deepwater exploration, he acknowledged the substantial opportunities and challenges associated with it.
He pointed out that the current exploration cycle, particularly for deepwater projects, requires a minimum of 10 years—5 years for seismic data acquisition, processing, and drilling, followed by an additional 5 years for asset development. In the context of the energy transition and India’s ambitious goals, such long timelines are unsustainable. Therefore, compressing these timelines through innovative and out-of-the-box solutions is essential.
Speeding Up Seismic API and Exploration
Shri Puri stressed that India’s energy demand far exceeds that of many major economies, and thus, it’s crucial to reduce seismic API (Acquisition, Processing, Interpretation) timelines from several years to just one year. The need for collaboration and innovation in data processing and interpretation to accelerate progress is critical. By leveraging new technologies and partnerships, India can reduce the time required for exploration, increase energy security, and meet future energy demands.
ONGC’s Role in Achieving Energy Self-Reliance
ONGC Chairman Arun Kumar Singh, delivering the welcome address, highlighted the significance of energy self-reliance for India to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat (Developed India). He underscored the need for rapid exploration, fostering innovation, and forming strategic partnerships to overcome the country’s energy challenges.
According to Singh, the path forward for India’s energy future lies in accelerating exploration, embracing technological advancements, and collaborating with both domestic and international stakeholders to create a resilient and sustainable energy ecosystem.
