In a landmark step towards strengthening social security for India’s informal workforce, the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), in collaboration with GoaMiles and HDFC Pension Fund, launched the National Pension System (NPS) for Goa’s driver community. The initiative, unveiled in Panjim, will extend pension coverage to nearly 5,000 drivers operating with GoaMiles, making it the first model of its kind in India.
At the launch event, 50 Permanent Retirement Account Numbers (PRANs) were distributed, symbolising the formal rollout of the scheme. As part of the initiative, GoaMiles has committed to contribute to the NPS accounts of its mobility partners, referred to as ‘Kaptaans’, ensuring structured retirement planning and financial dignity for the driver community.
Goa’s Transport Minister emphasized that the state’s drivers are much more than service providers—they are ambassadors of Goa’s hospitality, culture, and values, representing the essence of the state to every visitor. He noted that the initiative reflects Goa’s pioneering role in inclusive reforms and aligns with the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
Chairperson of PFRDA said that financial discipline and the power of compounding are key to building a secure future. “Let’s grow rich before we grow old,” he said, stressing that even modest, disciplined savings through NPS can grow into a substantial retirement corpus.
CEO of HDFC Pension Fund welcomed the partnership and underscored the importance of accessible and flexible financial instruments for workers in every sector. He added that the collaboration represents an opportunity to give back to society by ensuring long-term financial security for India’s workforce.
GoaMiles CEO reaffirmed the company’s commitment to empowering its driver partners through sustainable opportunities. He stated that extending NPS support will not only safeguard the drivers’ financial future but also strengthen their role as brand ambassadors of Goa’s tourism and hospitality.
Event concluded with acknowledgements from PFRDA leadership, thanking the Government of Goa, GoaMiles, HDFC Pension Fund, and the driver community for their collective efforts in making this pioneering initiative possible.
This collaboration reinforces PFRDA’s vision of “Every Profession, One Pension”, spreading the message that “NPS Zaruri Hai” for long-term security, dignity, and inclusive growth.
