Oil India Limited (OIL), TotalEnergies and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 to enhance collaboration across the liquefied natural gas (LNG) value chain, with a focus on strengthening energy security in North-East India.
The MoU establishes a structured framework for strategic engagement among the three organisations, enabling discussions on LNG sourcing, logistics, infrastructure alignment and asset mobilisation. The collaboration aims to ensure reliable and competitive LNG supplies to support OIL and NRL’s operational and growth requirements in the region, while leveraging TotalEnergies’ global LNG expertise.
The agreement is aligned with the Government of India’s vision to increase the share of natural gas, including LNG, to 15 per cent of the national energy mix by 2030. By facilitating access to cleaner fuel options, the partnership supports India’s broader energy transition goals, including reduction of carbon intensity and diversification of the energy basket.
North-East India, with its strategic location and growing energy demand, is expected to play a critical role in the country’s gas-based energy expansion. The MoU reflects a shared intent to explore integrated solutions that enhance supply reliability, improve infrastructure utilisation and promote sustainable development in the region.
Signed at a global energy platform, the collaboration underscores the importance of international partnerships and public sector coordination in building resilient, future-ready energy systems. The initiative is expected to contribute to long-term energy security, regional economic development and the gradual shift towards cleaner fuels in India’s evolving energy landscape.
