Northeast Poised to Lead India’s Green Textile Movement: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia

Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia The Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (Donor), Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, attended a high-level task force meeting on 22 July 2025, aimed at reviving the handloom and handicrafts sector in the Northeast. The meeting was chaired by Nagaland CM NeePhu Rio, and it included Union Minister of Textiles Mr. Giriraj Singh, Mizoram CM Lalduhoma and senior officials of Assam, Manipur and Government of India.

The meeting focused on the immense potential of the Northeast to run India’s permanent fashion revolution. The region makes it ideal for advancing the vision of environmentally friendly traditions, artisan heritage and efficient craftsmanship of Prime Minister Modi’s “fashion for environment and empowerment”.

Mr. Scindia emphasized that handloom and handicrafts can generate employment, promote innovation, and elevate India’s cultural heritage globally. The task force focuses on a roadmap:

• Market access and digitization
• Skill development and capacity building
• Modern infrastructure for artisans
• Establishment of General Facilitation Centers
• Promoting major products of each state

Union Minister Giriraj Singh assured full support from the Ministry of Textiles and committed to strengthen the coordination with the northeastern states to get global recognition to the artisans.

The scheme aims to align self-help groups with global markets, build a lower price chain, and make the handloom region a column of inclusive, sustainable development in the north-east.
