Umroi (Meghalaya), September 2, 2025: The 14th edition of India–Thailand Joint Military Exercise MAITREE-XIV commenced today with a grand opening ceremony at the Joint Training Node (JTN), Umroi, Meghalaya. The exercise will run from September 1 to 14, 2025, underlining the strong defence partnership between the two nations.
The bilateral exercise is part of the ongoing military-to-military exchange programme between India and Thailand. It aims to enhance cooperation, interoperability, and mutual understanding between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army. The 13th edition was conducted in Tak Province, Thailand, in 2023.
The Indian Army contingent, comprising 120 personnel from a Battalion of the Madras Regiment, is participating in the drills. The Royal Thai Army is represented by 53 personnel from the 1st Infantry Battalion, 14th Infantry Brigade.
Exercise MAITREE, instituted in 2006, is one of the most significant bilateral military training initiatives between the two nations. The current edition reinforces defence cooperation and reflects a shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and security.
The joint training is being conducted at Umroi, Meghalaya, from September 1–14, 2025, in semi-urban terrain suited for counter-terrorism operations.
The two-week programme will include:
- Company-level counter-terrorist operations under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
- Tactical drills, joint planning, and special arms skills.
- Physical fitness and raiding operations.
- A 48-hour validation exercise simulating realistic operational scenarios to test interoperability.
By focusing on counter-terrorism training and joint operations, Exercise MAITREE-XIV strengthens bilateral defence ties and enhances the capability of both Armies to work together in addressing regional and global security challenges.
