PIB – New Delhi, September 2, 2025: The Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) inaugurated Hindi Maah-2025 on Tuesday at its headquarters in New Delhi, marking the beginning of a month-long celebration of Hindi language and culture from September 2 to September 30.
The inaugural session began with a traditional lamp-lighting ceremony and mangalacharan. The event was graced by Prof. Sudha Singh, Head of the Hindi Department, University of Delhi, as the chief guest. Dr. Sachchidanand Joshi, Member Secretary, IGNCA, presided over the session, while Dr. Priyanka Mishra, Director (Administration), IGNCA, also shared her views. The program was conducted by Prof. Arun Bhardwaj, In-charge of IGNCA’s Rajbhasha Anubhag.
Delivering the presidential address, Dr. Joshi said that the purpose of Hindi Maah is to promote the use of Hindi while celebrating India’s multilingual unity. He urged everyone to learn one Indian language beyond their mother tongue during the three-month period between Hindi Diwas (September 14) and Bhartiya Bhasha Diwas (December 11). Successful participants will receive ‘Prerna Puraskar’ (incentive awards).
Dr. Joshi highlighted that Hindi publications at IGNCA have now reached 50 percent of the total output, with significant growth in the institute’s magazine Vihangama, social media posts, and communication material. He stressed that Hindi should remain simple and accessible, condemned its mockery in films and social media, and emphasized the need for dignity and respect for Hindi teachers. He also noted that while Artificial Intelligence tools can aid translation, human responsibility for accuracy and quality remains paramount.
Prof. Sudha Singh, in her address, said Hindi must not be seen only as a tool for trade or livelihood. “We must develop passion for Hindi, not use it merely for utility,” she said, urging people to love the language for its cultural depth. She reflected on Hindi’s journey from Pali, Prakrit, and Apabhransh to Khadi Boli, calling it a product of cultural synthesis. She expressed concern over its limited role in technical fields and appealed to the youth to learn other Bharatiya languages alongside Hindi, while also mastering one foreign language. She concluded by calling for love, respect, and pride for Hindi beyond material motives.
Dr. Priyanka Mishra observed that the expansion from Hindi Week to Hindi Fortnight, and now to Hindi Month, reflects IGNCA’s deepening commitment to Hindi promotion.
Hindi Maah 2025 aims to strengthen India’s linguistic diversity while encouraging youth participation in cultural and literary activities. It reinforces the message that all Indian languages are interconnected, fostering unity in diversity.
As part of the month-long celebrations, IGNCA will host a series of competitions and cultural programs, including:
- Forgotten or extinct Hindi vocabulary competition (September 3)
- Self-composed poetry recitation (September 4)
- Swasti Gayan, Mangalacharan, and devotional song competition (September 8)
- Regional vocabulary competition (September 18)
- Language/survey-based competition (September 22)
- Cultural evening (September 29)
- Prize distribution and closing ceremony (September 30)
These events will provide Hindi enthusiasts and youth participants an opportunity to showcase their creativity, knowledge, and commitment to language promotion.
By combining literary, cultural, and educational initiatives, IGNCA’s Hindi Maah-2025 aspires to make Hindi a language of thought, knowledge, and pride, while celebrating India’s multilingual heritage and promoting inclusive linguistic harmony.
