The Border Roads Organization (BRO) has opened the Zojila Pass in record time after being closed for 32 days. Today, on April 01, 2025, BRO Director General Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan flagged off the first convoy towards Ladakh. Jojila Pass is one of the most important and challenging passes in the world connecting the Kashmir Valley to Ladakh.
This year, due to western disturbances, the pass faced unusually low but strong closed period due to continuous snowfall for 17 days from 27 February to 16 March 2025. The huge amount of snow accumulated here had become a difficult challenge, but BRO personnel cleaned the snow in a record 15 days between March 17 to March 31, working under zero temperatures, strong winds and avalanche-dominated areas and odd conditions.
Every year, there is heavy snowfall on this inaccessible pass, due to which it has to be closed in the months of severe cold. This temporary closure not only affects the movement of soldiers and required supply, but also the daily life of the local population in Ladakh, which is dependent on this route for trade, medical aid and economic activities. Due to technological progress, better snow-nicular techniques and tireless efforts of BRO, the period lived for six months a few decades ago but now the period has reduced to a few weeks.
