Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has commenced the supply of traction transformers for the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project, which is being executed by a BHEL-led consortium in partnership with TRSL. The development marks a key milestone in India’s push towards indigenous manufacturing of advanced rail propulsion systems.
First set of semi-high-speed underslung traction transformers was virtually flagged off from BHEL’s Jhansi manufacturing plant by Bani Varma, Director (IS&P), and S. M. Ramanathan, Director (Electrical & R&D). Earlier, BHEL had flagged off the traction converters for the same project from its Bengaluru unit, highlighting the company’s multi-location manufacturing strength.
Designed and manufactured in India, the underslung traction transformers are engineered to support operational speeds of up to 160 kmph, meeting the technical requirements of modern semi-high-speed rail systems. The equipment is a critical component of the train’s propulsion architecture, enabling efficient power conversion and reliable performance.
BHEL’s growing role in strengthening India’s rail electrification and rolling stock ecosystem. With capabilities spanning traction motors, converters and transformers, BHEL is delivering end-to-end propulsion solutions aligned with the country’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project is aimed at enhancing long-distance rail travel with higher speeds, improved comfort and advanced technology. BHEL’s contribution to the project reinforces India’s self-reliance in high-speed and semi-high-speed rail technologies while supporting the modernisation of the national railway network.
