Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 32nd International Conference of Agricultural Economists (ICAE) at the National Agricultural Science Centre (NASC), New Delhi. This is the first time in 65 years that the conference is held in India. The theme for this year’s event is “Transformation Towards Sustainable Agri-Food Systems,” addressing global challenges like climate change, resource degradation, and rising production costs. Approximately 1,000 delegates from 75 countries are participating.
Welcoming the delegates, PM Modi highlighted India’s agricultural heritage and the importance of science and logic in its traditions. He pointed out India’s progress from being a food security concern to a global food surplus leader, and emphasized India’s commitment to global welfare through initiatives like “One Earth, One Family, One Future.”
The Prime Minister praised India’s robust agricultural research and education system, which includes over 100 research institutes, 500 agricultural colleges, and 700 Krishi Vigyan Kendras. He highlighted India’s diverse agro-climatic zones and its role in global food security.
India’s experience in agriculture, including advancements in climate-resilient crops and natural farming, is valuable for global discussions on food system transformation. The Prime Minister also discussed various technological and policy initiatives like Soil Health Cards, digital agriculture markets, and the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi, aimed at improving farmer welfare and sustainability.
The ICAE 2024 conference will focus on connecting global research and policy efforts, showcasing India’s agricultural progress, and addressing sustainable agri-food systems. The event features young researchers and professionals and aims to strengthen international partnerships and influence policy on a global scale.
