ONGC and Oil India Limited Sign Joint Operating Agreement to Boost Hydrocarbon Exploration in India
In an important step towards strengthening India’s energy security, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) and Oil India Limited (OIL) signed a joint operational agreement (JOA) on 12 August 2025 for the three highly promising blocks given under the OALP Bid Round IX.
The agreement consists of three blocks spread in some of India’s most promising hydrocarbon regions:
1. Assam Basin (Meghalaya)
2. Cambay Basin (Gujarat)
3. Mahanadi Basin (Ultra Deepwater, Eastern Coast)
Together, these blocks cover an area of about 10,964 sq km, which provides immense possibilities for hydrocarbon exploration and production. Under the terms of the agreement, the ONGC will act as the operator, which will lead the consortium with OIL as a strategic partner.
Speaking on development, ONGC officials highlighted the power of two major national energy companies to use advanced exploration technologies, unlock new stores, and accelerate domestic production. This is in line with the country’s comprehensive energy roadmap to reduce import dependence and achieve energy sector goals.
