India is facing a massive cybercrime epidemic, with 8.2 million complaints registered across the country as of late 2025. Union Home Minister Amit Shah revealed at a national conference that cyber fraudsters had siphoned off nearly ₹20,000 crore from Indian citizens — and government agencies managed to save or freeze only ₹8,000 crore of that amount.
Addressing a national cybercrime conference organized in collaboration with the CBI and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Shah warned that cybercriminals are no longer isolated individuals — they operate as well-organized, technology-savvy criminal networks that are “two steps ahead” of law enforcement.
Out of 8.2 million cybercrime complaints:
– 1,84,000 cases were converted into FIRs
– ₹8,000 crore was saved or frozen by authorities
– ₹12,000+ crore was lost permanently
The most dangerous categories include:
🔴 Digital Arrest Scams — victims are threatened and coerced into transferring money
🔴 Investment Fraud — fake apps promising high returns
🔴 Online Gaming Fraud
🔴 Romance and Matrimonial Scams
In Hyderabad alone, 330 FIRs were registered in March 2026, with over ₹2.55 crore recovered and refunded to victims. 24 accused were arrested from across India.
