Over the last ten years, the Indian Navy has deepened its partnership with the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) marine agencies, to increase marine security to the security and development (Sagar) attitude for all in the region. The Indian Navy has collaborated in several aspects with IO countries, such as joint naval exercises, coordinated patrolling, information partnership, humanitarian aid and disaster relief (HADR), capacity building, and other diplomatic programs.

IOS sagar initiative
The Indian Ocean Ship (iOS) Sagar is an initiative of the Indian Navy to promote continuous cooperation with the IO countries. The Indian Navy ship INS Sunayna will be deployed with a joint crew of nine friendly countries of the Navy (Komorus, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, South Africa) in South-West Ior. The ship will be stationed in the area for a month in April 2025 and will go to the port in Dar-e-Salam, Nakla, Port Louis, Port Victoria and Male, as well as a joint monitoring of the Special Economic Areas (EEZs) of Tanzania, Mozambique, Mauritius and Seychelles.
During this initiative, personnel from participating countries will receive two weeks of training in various naval professional schools in Kochi, including sea training. FFC workers will participate in the entire ship activities, watchcipping and other related programs. The participants of iOS Sagar will also see the activities of the Harbor stage of Aikeyme practice at Dar-e-Salam, Tanzania.
Aikeyme initiative
Both India and Africa attach immense importance to marine security and are committed to enhancing cooperation to control sea safety hazards such as pirates, illegal activities, smuggling, irregular and unrestricted fishing. In this direction, a large multilet maritime engagement exercise, called Africa-India major maritime engagement (Aikeyme), has been introduced in Sanskrit.
The first version of Aikeyme is being co-agreed by the Indian Navy and the Tanzania People’s Defense Force (TPDF) and will be held in Dar-e-Salam, Tanzania. The program will be inaugurated by Hon’ble Defense Minister Shri Rajnath Singh in Central-April 2025. This six-day practice will also contain co-agencies besides Comorus, Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles and South Africa.
