17-member team completes final phase of an 18-month training programme for the Indian Coast Guard’s Swarnim Jayanti celebrations
A 17-member mountaineering team of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has successfully scaled Mount Mukut, a 7,045-metre peak in the Himalayas, as part of preparations for a planned Mount Everest expedition in 2027.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami formally welcomed the team at a ceremony in Dehradun on October 12, 2026, following its successful summit on October 7. The expedition was conducted under the expert guidance of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling.
The achievement marks the completion of Phase V, the final stage of an intensive 18-month preparatory training programme designed to prepare the team for the challenge of climbing Mount Everest during the Indian Coast Guard’s Swarnim Jayanti celebrations in 2027.
The expedition began on September 15, 2026, with the team establishing Base Camp-I on October 1. The mountaineers subsequently navigated difficult terrain and extreme weather conditions before reaching the summit.
The experience gained during the climb is expected to support the team’s preparations for the proposed Everest expedition. The exercise also provided valuable operational lessons in high-altitude mountaineering, endurance and teamwork.
Dhami congratulated the mountaineers on their achievement and praised their determination and endurance. He said the expedition reflected courage and national pride.
Additional Director General of the Indian Coast Guard Anand Prakash Badola also congratulated the team, highlighting its teamwork in navigating the demanding Himalayan terrain.
The successful Mount Mukut expedition represents an important milestone in the Indian Coast Guard’s preparation for its planned Mount Everest climb in 2027, which is intended to mark the force’s Swarnim Jayanti celebrations.
