Gold Hits Historic High of ₹1.51 Lakh Per 10 Grams in India — What’s Driving the Price Surge?

Gold prices in India have reached a historic milestone, crossing the psychological barrier of ₹1.51 lakh per 10 grams. The surge has been driven by global uncertainty linked to the US-Iran war, a spike in central bank gold buying worldwide, and strong domestic demand from India’s ongoing wedding season.

As of April 12, 2026, 24-carat gold is priced at ₹1,51,600 per 10 grams, while 22-carat gold — the preferred choice for jewellery — is trading at ₹1,38,950 per 10 grams. Silver has also surged to ₹2,54,100 per kilogram.

1. WEDDING SEASON DEMAND — Despite record-breaking prices, Indian families continue to buy gold for the April-May wedding season. Demand for physical gold has remained inelastic.

2. GLOBAL RESERVE DIVERSIFICATION — Central banks worldwide are continuing a gold-buying spree, viewing the metal as a hedge against currency volatility caused by the Middle East war.

3. FLIGHT TO HARD ASSETS — With Bitcoin approaching the $1,00,000 mark, Indian investors are increasingly moving money into gold and digital assets, away from traditional savings.

If you are planning to buy gold jewellery for a wedding or investment, prices are unlikely to fall significantly in the short term given current global uncertainty. Financial experts suggest buying in small quantities rather than waiting for a major correction.
