GAIL (India) Limited has been honored with the prestigious 15th CIDC Vishwakarma Award in the ‘Achievement Award for Best Construction Projects’ category for its remarkable accomplishment with the Barauni – Guwahati Natural Gas Pipeline project (BGPL). Accepting the accolade on behalf of the company, GAIL Director (Projects) Mr. Deepak Gupta and Executive Director (Projects) Mr. A K Tripathi were presented with the award during a ceremony held yesterday.

The BGPL project, an integral segment of the Jagdishpur – Haldia & Bokaro – Dhamra Pipeline project, has successfully linked North-East India to the National Gas Grid for the very first time. Spanning 718 kilometers, the pipeline serves as a gateway facilitating access to environmentally friendly Natural Gas throughout the entire North-East region via the Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited (IGGL).

Among its notable clients are the IOCL refineries at Guwahati and Bongaigaon, along with nine Geographical Areas for City Gas Distribution across Bihar, West Bengal, and Assam. The construction of BGPL encountered various challenges, including navigating the formidable Brahmaputra river, traversing tough terrain, and dealing with unstable sub-soil conditions. Nevertheless, the GAIL team successfully surmounted all construction constraints and engineering hurdles, such as executing a 3.6 km HDD crossing of the Brahmaputra River, which was the longest at the time, and pioneering the use of micro-tunneling techniques for four major river crossings.

Over the years, GAIL, as a prominent gas pipeline operator, has significantly contributed to the expansion and enhancement of Natural Gas pipeline infrastructure and the Natural Gas market. Its existing network spans over 16,000 km and covers 20 states and 3 union territories.

The ‘CIDC Vishwakarma Awards’ draw inspiration from the essence of construction and creation embodied by Lord Vishwakarma, the revered deity of construction practices in India. These awards have evolved into a symbol of encouragement for individuals and organizations, motivating them to elevate their performance in their respective fields, thereby making substantial contributions to the growth and advancement of the Indian Construction Industry.
