Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), India’s national standards body, hosted delegates from across the world at its Central Laboratory as part of the 89th IEC General Body Meeting held in India from September 14 to 19, 2025. BIS represents India in global standardization forums including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The visiting delegates toured the state-of-the-art testing infrastructure at BIS’s largest laboratory, gaining insights into its role as a comprehensive testing hub covering over 800 Indian Standards. The laboratory also serves as a center for capacity building, providing internships and engaging students through Standards Clubs to nurture quality consciousness and expertise among young minds.
During the visit, Nishat Haque, DDGL, addressed the delegates, highlighting the importance of laboratories in implementing standards for consumer safety and quality assurance. She elaborated on initiatives such as capacity building programs, exposure visits, Manak Manthan, and conclaves, which strengthen BIS’s outreach to academia and industry.
K. V. Rao, Head of Central Laboratory, welcomed the delegates and showcased specialized facilities including the Toy Testing Laboratory, RAL Laboratory, Geyser Testing Laboratory, and home appliance testing units. He also outlined future plans to expand the laboratory’s testing capabilities.
Delegates interacted with current interns, engineering students from MoU institutes, and Standard Club students, learning about BIS’s role in fostering quality consciousness in India’s youth. The visit concluded with productive exchanges of ideas and perspectives between BIS officials and IEC delegates, enhancing mutual understanding of the global testing and quality infrastructure landscape and promoting collaboration.
