Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has entered into an agreement with Hitachi Energy India Limited for the design and implementation of a 6,000 megawatts, ±800 kV bi-pole and bi-directional high-voltage direct current (HVDC) terminal system in Rajasthan. This contract has been given to BHEL by Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission Limited, an entirely owned subsidiary of Adani Energy Solutions Limited (AESL). This system will transport renewable energy from Bhadla, Rajasthan, to the industrial and transport hub in Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh.
Scheduled for commissioning by 2029, this HVDC link will play a key role in realizing the national target of having 500 GW of power generation by renewable sources by 2030 for India. The advanced HVDC system will facilitate smooth bi-directional power flow control and in ensuring grid stability, thus paving way for rapid integration of renewable energy. The project boasts as testament of BHEL’s continuous commitment to the Government of India has shown towards its ‘Make in India’ initiative.
This is the fourth contract for BHEL in Ultra High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) transmission project. Some of previously mentioned projects executed were North-East Agra ±800 kV, 6,000 MW Multi-Terminal HVDC link, and ±800 kV, 6,000 MW Raigarh-Pugalur HVDC link. Currently, he is working on the ±800 kV, 6,000 MW Khavda-Nagpur HVDC link in association with Hitachi Energy India Pvt Ltd.
Under this project, BHEL will supply several major components such as Converter Transformers, Shunt Reactors, Filter Bank Capacitors, MV Switchgear, and Instrument Transformers for its Bhopal Plant. Thyristor Valves from its Electronic Division in Bengaluru will convert AC power from Bhadla into DC for transmission over a 950+ km HVDC line and convert it back to AC at Fatehpur to evacuate power. Besides, the company will design, supply and install large scale 765 kV/400 kV power evacuation system at Fatehpur terminals and 400 kV AC substations at both Bhadla and Bhadla Extension.
In India, BHEL is associated with important sector HVDC installations including the first-ever Rihand-Dadri, Chandrapur-Padghe, Ballia-Bhiwadi, and North East-Agra, Raigarh-Pugalur HVDC links. In addition to that, the company has built facilities for the manufacture of HVDC products with an insulation strength of up to 800 kV.
Leading the way in India’s Power Generation and Transmission sectors, BHEL provides integrated turnkey solutions for EHV Substations, HVDC Converter Stations, and FACTS, supported by a full range of Power System Studies.
