Heavy Electrical Plant (HEP), Bhopal, a historic unit of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), has made its strong presence towards nation building and self-reliance for over seven decades. Established in 1956, the plant has been the foundation of India’s heavy electrical equipment manufacturing journey.
This unit, started with international cooperation, has become the real identity of ‘Make in India’ and ‘Self-reliant India’ today. IIPE Bhopal has not only manufactured world-class products like power transformers, turbines, motors and switchgear, but has also continuously empowered key sectors like railways, defence, power and industry.
So far, more than 4,500 transformers, 550 hydrosets, and more than 35,000 industrial motors have been supplied at home and abroad. These figures are proof that BHEL Bhopal is not only meeting India’s energy needs but also representing India’s technological capability on the global platform.
The role of this unit has also been very important in the electrification of Indian Railways, manufacturing of defence equipment, development of steel, cement, fertilizer and renewable energy sectors. Its research and innovation centre – including one of the world’s largest ultra high voltage labs – is constantly developing new technologies.
BHEL Bhopal’s innovation is not only increasing production efficiency but also bringing about significant improvements in energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and workplace safety. This is the reason why this unit is also strengthening the goals of ‘Digital India’ and ‘Smart Infrastructure’.
To depict this glorious journey, BHEL has also displayed a special series of 20 artistic paintings which depict the technical achievements of the establishment as well as its human spirit and patriotism.
