BEML Ltd., a leading manufacturer of rail and metro trainsets in India, has inaugurated the prototype manufacturing phase for driverless metro trainsets as part of the 5RS-DM Project. This initiative is dedicated to fulfilling the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited’s (BMRCL) requirements for Lines 2 and 6, including the highly anticipated Bangalore Airport Line. This inauguration marks a significant milestone in BEML’s ongoing contributions to urban mobility solutions.
In August 2023, BEML secured the prestigious contract to supply 53 trainsets, overcoming intense global competition. The project, valued at approximately INR 3,177 crores, covers the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the trainsets. Additionally, BEML will provide comprehensive maintenance services for up to 15 years under the Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase 2, 2A, and 2B.
As the first Indian company to design, develop, and manufacture driverless trainsets, BEML continues to lead in rolling stock innovation. The inauguration of this new prototype manufacturing facility was attended by Shri Maheshwar Rao, Managing Director of BMRCL, Shri Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML Ltd., and other key officials from BEML.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Shri Shantanu Roy stated, “We are honored to inaugurate this prototype manufacturing facility in Bangalore, which is fast becoming a hub for India’s premier metro rail manufacturing. Alongside BMRCL, we are committed to delivering cutting-edge metro trainsets that will enhance the urban mobility experience for Bangalore’s commuters.”
The trainsets will feature a 6-car formation, entirely designed and developed by BEML’s in-house engineering teams in Bangalore. Constructed from high-tensile Austenitic stainless steel, the trainsets will ensure durability, safety, and passenger comfort. Each metro car will be equipped with two roof-mounted saloon air conditioners to provide effective air conditioning and enhance passenger comfort.
BEML’s Rail Coach Factory in Bangalore, established in 1948, was India’s first all-steel integrated rail coach factory and has produced over 20,000 mainline passenger coaches and Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) for Indian Railways. BEML is now preparing to launch the nation’s first prototype of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train in the near future.
