Kolkata Metro, India’s first metro service, inauguration of three new sections and adding 366 daily services, stepping into a new era of urban connectivity, which can travel around 9.15 lakh passengers every day.
On 22 August 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate three new metro stretches:
1. Green Line (Aspland to Sealdah, 2.45 km)
2. Yellow Line (Noapara to Jai Hind Airport, 6.77 km)
3. Orang Line (Beliaghat from Hemant Mukherjee, 4.4 km)
He will also flag off three metro trains on these lines.
The expansion will significantly increase the frequency in the entire network. The Green Line 186 services, Yellow Line 120 services and Orange Line will operate 60 services, reduce waiting time and reduce congestion.
The Green Line is expected to be the greatest relief for the asplayed-Siyaladah section passengers. Currently, travel between Howrah and Sealdah-two of India’s busiest railway terminals take 40-45 minutes by road. The new metro link will reduce the time of travel by only 11 minutes, which will save valuable time for millions of daily travelers.
The expansion of the Yellow line up to Jai Hind Airport will provide fast and more comfortable access to domestic and international passengers, airline employees and airport employees, providing a safe and convenient travel option. Similarly, the expansion of the orange line will promote the final-mile connectivity throughout Kolkata.
With this expansion, Kolkata Metro is strengthening urban mobility, reducing road congestion, and supporting environmentally friendly public transport solutions to suit India’s approach to sustainable urban development.
