The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) jointly announced the launch of the BhashaNet portal during the Universal Acceptance Day event held today. This event received active support from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), marking a significant stride towards enhancing digital inclusion and fostering universal acceptance throughout India. Under the theme “BhashaNet: Driving Universal Acceptance Forward,” the event underscored MeitY/NIXI’s steadfast dedication to ensuring that everyone can fully engage in the digital realm, regardless of linguistic or textual barriers. The event featured dynamic panel discussions and workshops, with participation from Bhashini, ONDC, NIC, C-DAC Microsoft, UASG of ICANN, Data Xgen, Infibeam, ZOHO, and FICCI. These sessions aimed to equip participants and the broader community with insights and best practices to achieve universal acceptance compliance for applications and systems. India’s successful hosting of the regional Universal Acceptance Day event sets the stage for the upcoming Global Universal Acceptance Day, slated to occur on March 28, 2024, in Belgrade, Serbia. During his keynote address, Secretary of MeitY, Shri S. Krishnan, emphasized that universal acceptance is vital for an inclusive internet, enabling non-English speakers to access online resources. He stressed the importance of leveraging technology and fostering collaboration to meet the diverse needs of users, regardless of language or script. He further highlighted India’s potential to lead in establishing standards for universal acceptance compliance. Government officials and industry leaders came together to commemorate this milestone, reaffirming India’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive digital environment.

The theme of the event, “BhashaNet: Impetus Towards Universal Acceptance,” highlighted MeitY/NIXI’s unwavering commitment towards ensuring that, regardless of linguistic or textual barriers, everyone can fully participate in the digital world. The event featured engaging panel discussions and workshops, with representatives from Bhashini, ONDC, NIC, C-DAC Microsoft, UASG of ICANN, Data Xgen, Infibeam, ZOHO and FICCI sharing insights and best practices for achieving Universal Acceptance readiness. These sessions aimed to empower participants and the community at large in their efforts to make applications and systems Universal Acceptance compliant.
